Medical Dosimetrist

What is a medical dosimetrist? This job is closely related to a radiation therapist in that they help prescribe the correct dosage amount of radiation to cancer patients without harming any healthy organs or tissue. What separates them from radiation therapists is how much more they work with the oncologist and less with the patients. Although this is a relatively new field, it has grown tremendously and provides lots of opportunities to those who are interested.

Annual Salary: $96,000 - $123,000

Education: 4-year college degree and taking part in a 1-2 year long dosimetry program

Expected Duties:

  • Have an understanding of technical aspects relating to radiation oncology and medical physics in order to construct a treatment plan.

  • Understand the safety protocols regarding radiation technology. 

  • Assist the oncologist in creating the treatment plan.

  • Work with advanced technology and be familiar with MRI, PET, and CT scans.

Preferred Location: Cancer treatment center in Michigan - Cancer centers are specific to the research and recovery of multiple kinds of cancer. With support from the National Cancer Institute, patients are able to obtain the care that they need specific to their current state, while research is funded to continue to find out more about the complex sickness. Clinical trials also take place in cancer centers.
